Choosing the right size of cabinet hardware is the difference between a kitchen that looks finished and one that looks "almost right". This guide covers the three things that matter: pull length, hole spacing and placement.
1. How long should a cabinet pull be?
A simple rule designers use: a pull should be about one-third of the drawer width.
| Drawer / door width | Suggested hardware |
|---|---|
| Under 12 in (300mm) | A single knob, or a 64–96mm pull |
| 12–24 in (300–600mm) | 96–160mm pull |
| 24–36 in (600–900mm) | 160–256mm pull, or two knobs |
| Over 36 in (900mm+) | 320mm+ long pull, or two pulls |
| Pantry doors, tall wardrobes, appliance panels | Extra long pulls (500–1200mm) |
Prefer a bolder look? Size up one step. Prefer a quieter, minimalist look? Size down, or use hidden edge pulls.
2. Hole spacing (center-to-center, "CC")
The hole spacing is the distance between the centers of the two screw holes. It is the number that matters most when you are replacing hardware, because the new pull must match the holes already in your cabinets. The overall length of the pull is always longer than its hole spacing.
How to measure: remove one old pull, then measure from the center of one screw hole to the center of the other, in millimeters. Common standard sizes are 64, 76, 96, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256 and 320mm. Then compare it with the hole spacing shown in the product specifications or size options before you order.
3. Knob or pull?
- Knobs work best on doors and small drawers, and are the easiest way to add character. Our animal, botanical and solid brass statement knobs are designed to be the focal point of a dresser or kids' room.
- Pulls are easier to grip and suit drawers, heavy doors and kitchens that are used every day.
- Mixing works well: knobs on doors, pulls on drawers, in the same finish.
4. Where to place the hardware
- Upper (wall) cabinets: on the door's bottom corner, opposite the hinge, about 2–3 in (50–75mm) from the edges.
- Base cabinets: on the door's top corner, opposite the hinge, about 2–3 in (50–75mm) from the edges.
- Drawers: centered horizontally. Center it vertically on a flat drawer front, or on the top rail of a shaker-style front.
- Tip: make a paper or cardboard template once and reuse it, so every door and drawer lines up.
5. Screws and door thickness
Our decorative knobs come with 22mm screws by default. If your doors or drawer fronts are thicker (for example double-layer drawer fronts), measure the thickness before ordering and contact us. We can advise on the right screw length.
